Workshop Introduction:

Understanding the importance of both traditional and electronic approaches to job searching will expand your opportunities and enhance your chances of success.  Job search skills are ever-changing and it is necessary to remain up-to-date and knowledgeable on where to access employers and how to apply effectively. Our workshops will provide you with the information and awareness you will need.

The following is a list of the workshops we provide:

Hidden Job Market (Networking) (Half day session) Top

Relying on job advertisements is not the most effective way to get a job. Over 70% of all jobs are found through networking. Learn how to market yourself using your “formal” and “informal” connections to maximize potential opportunities. This workshop focuses on the process of networking and how to make it work for you.

  • Why and how Networking works
  • How to set up a powerful Network
  • Effectively present your best attributes
Direct Employer Contact Techniques (Half day session) Top

Understand the importance of contacting employers directly and why it is a useful strategy.  Learn to overcome your fear or hesitation in making those initial calls.  This workshop will explore how to Cold Call employers to generate success.

Electronic Job Search (Half day session) Top

The internet has established itself as an important and growing component of a successful job search strategy. Gain insight into how to target websites that are most effective for you.

Content covered includes:

  • Job postings and websites specific to Ottawa
  • How to register with job sites to post resumes and create automated job matching alerts
Resume, E-resume and Cover Letters (Full day session) Top


In today’s job market it is not enough to use a generic resume to apply for all positions. Competition for jobs is tough and your resume must stand out to be selected.  This workshop will introduce the concept of keyword and targeted resumes.

The electronic job search requires a specific resume format, learn what and how!

The workshop explores the importance of creating effective cover letters.  Learn how to write successful letters in both traditional and electronic formats.

  • Where to find “keyword” specific content
  • Personalizing and targeting your resume and cover letter
  • Converting to an e-resume from your traditional resume
  • Communicating effectively with employers via e-mail
 

 

E-resume and Cover Letters (Half day session) Top

This workshop is designed for participants who already possess a workable Word resume.  You will learn why
e-resumes are necessary and how to create one from your traditional resume.  You have 15 seconds or less to convince an employer to open your e-mail, read your e-mail and not delete your e-mail…do you feel confident?

  • Responding effectively to job advertisements
  • Formats to use and when to use them
  • How to use cover letters as a valuable marketing tool
Employer Meet & Greet (Half day session) Top

Employers from various sectors, in line with current labour market trends, will be invited to speak to groups of participants.  Employers will provide an overview of a typical day in their work environment as well as: career possibilities, training/educational requirements, labour market trends and interview preparation.

Online Employment Research (Half day session) Top

This workshop shows you how to use the internet to locate and identify companies and organizations of interest.  By individually researching company websites you may learn about job opportunities.  Increase your chances for success by decreasing your competition.  Discover the jobs that are not posted on popular job sites.

We also examine employment agencies by discussing the opportunities they offer and how to access them.  Clarify misconceptions and discover the benefits of employment agencies.

Ace Your Next Interview (Full day session) Top

Interviews are an opportunity to convince an employer that you are the ideal candidate for the position advertised.  Mistakes can be very costly.  Proper preparation not only reduces stress, it will also ensure that you adequately sell your skills and qualifications.  This workshop will boost your confidence and increase your chances of success.   Know yourself, know your skills, know the employer and close the deal!

  • Pre-interview preparation
  • Establishing positive rapport
  • What not to say in an interview
  • Types of interviews and how to deal with each one
  • Body language and its impact
  • How to negotiate your salary

We provide relevant sample questions and the opportunity to role-play with the use of a video camera.

Interview on Camera (Half day session) Top

This workshop is a continuation of “Ace your next Interview”.  Participants are able to further develop their interview skills through additional role play and practice.

Your Workplace Rights (Half day session) Top

As an employee working in Ontario you need to ensure your rights are being respected, you must be informed.  You should also be aware of how to be safe on the job, regardless of your work environment.

This workshop will focus on three areas:

  • The Employment Standards Act is the law that sets the rules for reasonable treatment of employees.
  • The Occupational Health and Safety Act is the law that protects workers against health and safety hazards on the job.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) educates workers on “Their Right to Know”.

The lack of interest in the trades over the past number of years has resulted in a dramatic shortfall which must be addressed quickly.

One out of every five jobs in the Ottawa region is with the Federal Government. Because many individuals are seeking employment in this area, the competition for open positions is fierce. This workshop shows you where to find government jobs open to the public and how to effectively apply.
